North Ferry in Greenport NY to Long Wharf in Sag Harbor
What is the trip like from Greenport NY to Sag Harbor? Many of our guests, especially those not familiar with the area, ask this question. Many of the maps apps and maps web pages suggest the entire trip takes a little over an hour (it doesn’t) even though the distance is only a little over 7 miles as the crow flies.
The entire trip has 4 short segments:
- Greenport to Shelter Island (North ferry)
- Shelter Island drive (4.3 miles)
- Shelter Island to North Haven (South ferry)
- North Haven to Long Wharf (3.4 miles)
Greenport to Shelter Island (8 minutes) – The first segment is via the North Ferry. This ferry is open early in the morning until very late. There are always multiple ferries running so that when one leaves, the next one pulls in. Relax and enjoy the views. Ferry photo below.
Shelter Island Drive (10 minutes) – Short trip (4.3 miles) across beautiful Shelter Island to the South Ferry.
Shelter Island to North Haven (5 minutes) – This segment is via the South Ferry. Smaller ferry, shorter trip, more nice views. Ferry is open early in the morning until very late. There are always multiple ferries running so that when one leaves, the next one pulls in.
North Haven to Long Wharf in Sag Harbor (5 minutes) – Just follow the signs to Sag Harbor. It is all the same road (RT 114) less than 3.5 miles away.
You will need to add some time for getting on and off the ferries – say 5 minutes each on average. This adds about 20 minutes making the entire trip round 45 – 50 minutes. But for 15 minutes of that, you won’t be driving, just enjoying the water views. The total actual driving distance is less than 10 miles!
